With the construction of a beautiful new sanctuary, it was necessary to install a larger instrument to serve the needs of the congregation during worship. An organ committee was formed in order to choose a suitable instrument. Members of this committee were Ruth Andersen, Pat Geringer, Max Gibson, Audry Hanson, Vincent Moats, Doris Payne, Joan Peery, Rosamund Slonski, Madgalene Tollefson, and Deo Wolff. The following is an excerpt from an information pamphlet handed out to members detailing its decision:
"The liturgical worship service of the Lutheran Church and the emphasis on congregational participation through hymn singing most clearly suggests and recommendation of a pipe organ. The clean, clear, precise tonal characteristics are most complimentary to this liturgical worship and hymn accompaniment.
Although the initial cost of a pipe organ is more than that of an electronic instrument, the maintenance costs over the years tend to be lower, and the life expectancy is double or triple that of the electronic. Therefore, we believe it is most certainly a matter of good stewardship to purchase a pipe organ. We know you will be happy with this recommendation and we urge your support of the project."
Built by Casavant Freres, located in St. Hyacinth, Quebec, Canada, the organ was constructed at the factory and arrived in packing crates on May 8, 1983. It was then installed and a dedication service was performed on June 12, 1983. The total cost of the pipe organ was approximately $125,000.
